How to Approach a Loved One About Hoarding
Raising the subject of hoarding with someone you love is daunting. Done gently, that first conversation can open the door to real change; done clumsily, it can shut it firmly.
Before you speak
Pick a calm, private moment, not the middle of an argument. Decide on one small, caring point you want to make rather than a long list of complaints.
How to phrase it
- Use "I" statements: "I worry about you" rather than "you've let this get out of hand".
- Focus on safety and wellbeing, not appearance.
- Ask questions and listen, instead of issuing instructions.
- Reassure them that they remain in control of their things.
Expect the first conversation to be the start of a journey, not a one-off fix. Patience and consistency build the trust that change depends on.
