Signs of Hoarding Disorder
Hoarding disorder is a recognised mental-health condition, distinct from ordinary collecting or untidiness. Spotting the signs early makes it far easier to offer the right kind of help.
Common signs
- Persistent difficulty discarding possessions, whatever their value.
- Strong distress or indecision at the thought of letting go.
- Accumulation that fills and clutters living spaces so they cannot be used.
- Significant impact on daily life, relationships or safety.
- Excessive acquiring, even of items there is no room for.
Why it happens
Hoarding is often linked to anxiety, depression, trauma, grief or other conditions. The belongings can represent security, memory or identity, which is why a purely practical clear-out rarely solves it on its own.
If several of these signs are present, encourage a conversation with a GP. Practical clean-up works best alongside support for the underlying difficulty.
